Term2.png Social Bookmarking
A user-defined taxonomy system for storing and sharing bookmarks of web pages online. Bookmarks can either be made public, allowing other users of the Internet to freely access them, shared with specific groups of people only, or kept private for personal use. Metadata can be added to the bookmarks in the form of tags describing the content of the resource, so that other users can easily identify information that is useful for them. Unlike personal bookmark folders, which can be accessed from one computer only, bookmarks are stored on the Web and can be accessed from everywhere. Content bookmarked by other users can be searched by tag or by popularity (i.e. number of people who tagged that content). Some of the most popular social bookmarking tools are Delicious, Technorati and Google Bookmarks.[1] See also: Folksonomy, Social media, Tagging, Web 2.0.
